On Wednesday, Ring of Honor sent a statement both on their website and their social media handles stating that the company has released every single wrestler that has been contracted with Ring of Honor. The company has also stated that they will have a few shows left before taking this hiatus and possibly returning on April of 2022 with “Supercard of Honor”
As for the wrestlers, Ring of Honor have also stated that all of the wrestlers will still be paid while they can work in other companies at this time.
As for the streaming service - Honor Club and there larger tape library - which includes the first All In event, Sinclair owns it and has put it up for sale since last year. However, they are asking more than what people are willing to get for this tape library.
This is a very sad time for this announcement to take place. At one time - ROH was the number two company in the United States but in a shocking turn of fortune - it is IMPACT that lives longer than ROH (possibly).
We now have a over-glut of stars and the questions surrounding them. The biggest one is Andrade’s Family- Consisting of Rush (a deeply underrated Heavyweight), Dragon Lee, and Bandito. Andrade has made it EXPLICITLY clear that he wants all of them in AEW and he is going to get his wish. They are all amazing talent with the latter three heading towards their peak. Tony Khan realizes he can sell so many tickets its not even funny. The question has always been story-lines.
One other factor is the fate of Charlotte Flair -and her issues with her booking. With the recent shoot that happened on Smackdown, many are stating that her time is up and she may want out of her contract. Many have stated that she acted in a unprofessional manner towards the way the title switch took place. Andrade also sees the opportunity of bringing his wife to AEW as well.
What about the other ROH wrestlers? Many of them will head to AEW in some form or fashion - despite many of their issues with some of their promos. It will be quite a interesting time for the mid majors and the majors as well.
What caused ROH to make this choice - its simple. They overpaid on a booker with questionable past. Sinclair wanted to use ROH in a syndicated platform with the former WGN Superstation as its main hub, and when that didnt work out they couldn’t pull the trigger. New Japan was bigger than ROH and ROH didn’t use anybody that could keep up with New Japan stars as their champion. The Pandemic Hurt - but ROH’s recovery was muted compared to what AEW or even MLW did. And, they had no major booker that could tell stories to make people care about some of the wrestlers that were improving.
I remember that ROH came at a time when ECW passed away - and XPW tried to gain some traction - ROH took the Sportsman aspect of the ECW movement. And for the first few years they were good, but it was the 2005 to 2008 era that helped them succeed beyond anybodies expectations. They just couldnt get through certain humps, they couldn’t be the WCW/ECW replacement - they even couldn’t become a more Japanese focused product which could have made them a lot of cash if they figured it out. But Wrestling in America is a Morality play and the simplistic storylines without the grounding in the American mythos hurt any chance of ROH getting out from its era that it started as.
There will be more details about this story as more information becomes available
The recent PWI 500 Womans Wrestler List of the top stars I feel, was great but you can switch the top three around and one wouldn’t be wrong. However next year- the field will be crowded. And DO MEAN Crowded.
